New options for recreational facilities are expanding to incorporate creative play spaces and open up activity choices for previously under-served members of the community. Both large municipal areas and small rural towns are getting in on the act – and the creativity they are showing us is both inspirational and instructive. We’ve selected four great projects to feature from across North Carolina: Rocky Face Park in Alexander County; the Ninja Playground in the City of Graham; the Cashie River Treehouses in the Town of Windsor; and the multi-generational playground at Marion Diehl Park in Mecklenburg County. Each has taken a unique approach to bring play space to a broader range of participants and have become a source of pride for those responsible for creating them.

Takeaways

  • Discover how local communities developed projects that capitalize on their unique geographic and demographic characteristics to provide recreation amenities that appeal to core users in new ways.
  • Examine how some communities have developed facilities for historically under-served constituents and expanded recreation opportunities for the elderly and disabled members of the community.
  • Explore how recreation facility designers can incorporate unique community attributes into site planning and local economic development “branding” initiatives.
